Beautification Commission Meeting
Thursday September 5, 2013

ABSENT: Dolores Kehoe (excused); Tim Bockus, Director/Public Works (excused).

Call to order:
Chair Sirois called the meeting of the Beautification Commission to order at 5:28 p.m.
Acceptance of minutes of AUGUST 1, 2013
Marylee Hickey made a motion to accept the minutes of the August 1, 2013 meeting.
Seconded by Mary Mourey. Approved.
Opportunity for citizens to speak. None at this time.
Financial Report:
Mary Mourey reported the general budget balance is $7950.00.
Remembrance Fund balance is $520.96.
Communications
- Arbor Day Foundation Survey
Chair's report
Chair Sirois reported that she had met with the Reminder reporter, Corey AmEnde and was interviewed. A human interest story about the Beautification Commission was published. He told her that he will be sure to put in the Reminder the award winners of the Beautification Awards for 2014.
Chair Sirois is still trying to connect with Dan Larson in reference to Goodwin College. Dan will be showing Pat around Goodwin College, the schools that were just built and the work they do in town for the betterment of the community.
Tree Warden's RePORT No report at this time.
Old BUsiness:
Chair Sirois reported that she and Tim Bockus have not met to review areas in town.
New BusineSS
- Holiday Fest – December 6 – December 9, 2013 (No Kickoff)
Chair Sirois will be emailing past participants to see if they are still interested in participating this year. She will be meeting with the new library director, along with Ted Fravel, to schedule areas in the EHCCC for programs sponsored by the library.
Brochures-
- Discussion on a theme for Holiday Fest – Polar Bear, Elfs, Holiday Bells
- Printing – Chair Sirois will contact Goodwin College to see if they could print the brochures
Town Green kiosk – Park and Rec will decorate for Holiday Fest
Chair Sirois commented on how lovely the barrels throughout town were.
Tony Russo reported he will be planting mums at Alumni Park and Hartford East.
OTHER BUSINESS
Ted Fravel reported there will be two clean-up dates in town:
- September 21 Labor Field beginning at 9:00 a.m. working with members from the Church of Latter
Day
- October 5 – Source to Seas – River cleanup
Mary Mourey reported that Joanne Dorn, Town of East Hartford Social Services, has requested that contributions from Holiday Fest be earmarked toward food rather than fuel. Mary will ask Joanne to attend the October 3 meeting.
CONCERNS OF THE COMMISSION:
- Rte 5 Service sign - overgrown
- Mattresses on Tolland Street, Main Street
- Furniture on Chapel Street
Greg Donato reported on the issues last month:
- 826 Brewer – has been cleaned up, painted garage doors. Only firewood in yard now.
- 805 Brewer – debris and broken fence
- 795 Brewer – there is a bag (like a dumpster) collecting rubbish from the home and yard
Payment of Bills:
Theresa Godreau $ 75.00
Mary Mourey made a motion to pay the bills as submitted. Seconded by Pat Byrnes. Approved.
Adjournment:
There being no further business, Elaine Dube made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 6:15 p.m. Seconded by Betty Russell. Approved.
The next meeting of the Commission will be on Thursday, October 3, 2013 in Building Department Conference Room at 5:30 p.m.
